A new livability study placed Massachusetts No. 4 nationally after comparing all 50 states across 51 indicators, including affordability, educational attainment and healthcare access.
Massachusetts stood out for education and health, with the nation’s top public-school systems, highest health-insurance coverage, lowest premature-death rate and strong life expectancy.
The state also scored well on safety and lifestyle, posting low property-crime and traffic-fatality rates, plus top marks for hiking, biking and transit.
Affordability remained Massachusetts’ biggest challenge: the study ranked the state 48th for cost of living, 47th for homeownership and 41st for housing affordability.
Still, Massachusetts also had the nation’s highest median income at $104K, helping explain why many residents see strong schools, healthcare and amenities as worth it.
